Bacterial multidrug resistance has been an emerging clinical problem in many parts of the world. The mechanisms are diverse and include acquisition of genes involved in drug inactivation or bypass, mutations in multiple target genes, but also in non-target regulatory genes. Mutations in non-target genes usually lead to non-specific resistance, affect several drug classes and provide low-level drug resistance sufficient to allow bacterial survival and acquisition or development of secondary resistance genes/mutations. The major topics of our research are mechanisms and inhibition of altered drug transport and drug efflux in bacteria. We are also involved in epidemiological studies examining the clinical relevance and burden of bacterial multidrug resistance, the efficacy of old and new drugs in this situation, and the impact of so-called ecological studies with drug-use interventions on bacterial resistance. |
